Walks and Events Programme for 2024

Cath Freeman is our new walks co-ordinator (telephone 01606 782892).  Please notify her if you wish to arrange a walk for 2024 or to change the date that you have previously selected.

Jean Pritchett is responsible for publicising advance information about the proposed walks on this website (telephone 01606 76055 or email zpritchett@aol.com) and details for publication should be sent to her in good time so that information can be included in the walking programme.  Information should include starting time and starting place of the walk, expected walking distance and likely walking conditions together with any potential hazards and whether walkers should bring drinks and refreshments. Also include if the walk will be suitable for dogs.

Walking dates for 2024

Please note that the days of our mid week evening walks planned for 2024 will be changed and will alternate between Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Walk Leaders should send full information about the proposed walk to Jean Pritchett for publication on the website approximately 3 weeks before the relevant date and although Cath Freeman is our Walks Co-ordinator, full details of the walk should also be sent to John Freeman in good time so that he can email individual members in advance.  Additionally, if walk leaders are willing to do so, personal contact details should also be given to John so that this can be included in the emailed information - this can be particulary useful if potential walkers are delayed or lost on the way to the starting point and therefore likely to turn up later than the proposed starting time.

Sunday walks.  These walks normally start at about 11 a.m. and can be further afield as walkers normally travel to the starting point by car.  Distance can be for a distance of between 5 and 10 miles or even longer, depending on the likely walking conditions and the degree of difficulty.

Evening walks:  These walks normally start in the early evening and are closer to home.  Walking distance is normally up to 6 miles depending on walking conditions and hours of daylight.

Saturday-Sunday 29th June  Weekend Away.  Leaders Cath and John Freeman.

Location:  Ambleside.  Although this is designed as a weekend away, walking is only organised for Saturday, 29th June.

Walkers should meet at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning outside Gaynors outdoor shop/Rohan shop in the precinct in  Ambleside centre.  The walk is in two parts.

1.  Ambleside to Grasmere following the Coffin Trail (4 miles).  This is undulating rather than hilly, so please wear appropriate shoes.  We will spend about 60 mins in Grasmere for lunch so there will be time to purchase lunch or you could brink a packed lunch and drinks.  Walkers could then choose to leave the walk and get a bus back from Grasmere to Ambleside.

2.  Grasmere to Ambleside via Rydal Water (about 5.5 miles).  This terrain is slightly less undulating.

There is nothing organised for the Saturday evening meal but the leaders plan to eat in Sheilas Cottage in Ambleside at 7 p.m. and if walkers also want to go to the same venue advanced booking is strongly recommended.

The leaders suggest that members should meet at the Golden Rule pub on Smithy Brow, Ambleside LA22 9AS on both evenings at 9 p.m for a 'social gathering'.  But please note that food is not served here.

If you are intending to walk, please let Catherine know in advance and email her via the web address or her hotmail address - but she is leading the walk on 19th May so you could discuss your options for the weekend away with her at this earlier walk.
