Winter Walking

Saturday, 8th December 2018.  Leaders Julie Farrow and Jean Pritchett.

Day Trip to Birmingham by train for shopping and/or walking.

Walkers and non-walkers are welcome.  Birmingham city centre and the shops are decorated for Christmas and there is a Christmas Market, a Ferris Wheel,. Artisan Markets, a Skating Rink and other outdoor attractions.

For walkers we will offer two versions of a canal walk.  Both will start in the Grand Union canal basin near the Bull Ring and will end in the Civic Centre canal basin in the city centre, near the Symphony Hall, Library and Town Hall.  The shorter walk is about 4.5 miles and the longer walk (about 8.5 miles) will include the canal loop as far as Star City and under the Spaghetti Junction of the Motorways.

Walking is level and easy along good paved towpaths, but this is an urban area where the canal is bordered by city centre factories, university buildings, recycling plants, and only a short section of relatively open countryside.  There are no pubs, cafes or toilets so walkers should bring a packed lunch and a drink.

Meet at Hartford railway station at 9.30 to catch the 9.36 a.m. train to Birmingham New Street station, and the time of return train can be chosen according to personal plans.  Trains leave Birmingham every half hour (at 3.36, 4.01p.m. etc.) and the 5.01 p.m. train would be suitable - but it is advisable to book beforehand when seats are cheaper.

For further information ring Jean on 01606 76055 or Julie on 01606 784393.

Entries for the Photographic Competition should be submitted to John Leese by December 9th.  Entry details and categories are shown on a separate page of this website.
