Walks Programme for 2016/2017

Denise Davies is the walks co-ordinator (telephone 01606 330480 or 07932 150516).

Denise has distributed a list of the walking dates for each member giving the contact details of the walk leaders.  Will leaders please advise Denise if these details are incorrect and more lists can be obtained from Denise.

At least three weeks before the date of the walk, the leader should provide details of the walk to Jean Pritchett (Webmaster@davenhamramblers.co.uk) or telephone 01606 76055 so that full information can be publicised on the Web-site and in the Guardian.  Leaders should also pin notices for the walk on the notice boards at the Bulls Head, the Village Notice Board and the Spar Shop in Davenham.

Sunday 13th August 2017     Day Trip by Coach

Leaders: Julie, Hayley, Jean and Ray.

Location:  The Ribble Valley including Hurst Green, Stonyhurst, The Three Rivers Walk and Clitheroe.

Our main walk will be The Three Rivers Walk.  This is a walk of about 8 miles and will follow good tracks and paths from Hurst Green  through the grounds of Stonyhurst College and down several steps through the woods to the River Hodder and will follow the  river to Cromwell's Bridge.  The walk then follows the Ribble Way following the banks of the River Ribble to the juntio with the River Calder at the Jacobean manor house of Hacking Hall before returning up hill to Hurst Green.  Walking is relatively easy with no major hazards although there are several stiles.  There are superb views together with interesting bird life along the rivers..  Walkers should bring a packed lunch and a drink.

A shorter walk will include the River Ribble and the farm trails round Hurst Green and will also include a private escorted tour of Stonyhurst College.  This is a magnificent building dating back to 1372 and is of historical and architectural interest and is not normally open to the public.  During the Reformation many of the inhabitants were martyred and in later years the buildings were used to accommodate Cromwell's army but Stonyhurst is now a major public school.   The buildings hold the largest collection of relics in Britain and the tour will include the museum, the traditional Hogwart's classrooms, other older and newer parts of the buildings and the spectacular gardens. Reservations for this tour must be confirmed before 4th August and the tour will also be available for members who are not walkers.  Unfortunately there will not be sufficient time for walkers on the Three RIvers Walk to take part in this visit.

In mid afternoon the coach will take us to Clitheroe which is the major market town of the Ribble Valley and is overlooked by an imposing castle with expansive gardens.  For members interested in real ale there is also the Bowland Brewery.

In early evening we have arranged a three course meal at Mytton Fold Golf and Country Club near Whalley. See separate page for meal choices.

The coach will pick us members outside The Bulls Head in Davenham at 9.30 a.m. and we expect to return by 9.30 p.m.

Reservations and meal choices must be made to Julie Farrow (01606 784393) or Jean Pritchett (01606 76055) before 4rd August with cheques payable to Davenham Rambling Society.  Price per person is £30 including the cost of the meal and coach fare.  The conducted tour of Stonyhurst is free but donations to Stonyhurst Enterprises would be appreciated.

Walkers, non-walkers and non-members will be welcome but no dogs please.

Wednesday evening    23rd August 2017    Leader:  Paul Everatt.

Sunday   27th August 2017    Leader:  Denise Davies

Sponsored Walk on behalf of The Samaritans.

This will be a walk in a figure of 8 but in two sections both starting from The Candle Factory at Higher Burwardsley, CH3 9PF.

The first section will start at 10.30 a.m. and will be 5.5 miles.  This will be quite a challenging walk taking in Bulkley Hill and Rawhead.

The second section will start at 1.30 p.m. and will also be 5.5 miles but will be a gentler walk taking in Beeston and the surrounding flat areas but will return through the Peckforton estate up a gradual hill.

Sunday 24th September 2017     Leader:  Paul Everatt (change of Leader).

Sunday 8th October 2017     Leaders:  Fiona and Pete Baker.

Sunday  22nd October 2017   Leaders:  Evelyn Hewitt, John Beech and Dave Capper.

Location: Linear Walk between Weaverham and Northwich.

This will be a level walk of 8.5 miles following canal banks and footpaths.  Walkers should bring a packed lunch but stops will be made at various hostelries en route including the Legh Arms, the Stanley Arms and the Salt Barge.  New walkers and dogs are welcome.

The walk will start at Lakehouse field, Withers Lane, Weaverham and will travel via Acton Bridge, Marbury and Wincham ending at The Salty Dog or Penny Black in Northwich.

As this is a linear walk, the walk leaders will be arriving at the start by bus, travelling on the 11.28 a..m. from Northwich to start the walk at 11.45.  Other walkers could catch the same bus that also stops at Greenbank and Bradburns Lane.  At the end of the walk, the last bus to Weaverham leaves Northwich at 17.28 p.m.

Our leader Dave says that this could be a staggeringly good walk!
